Things to Do in Telc: Renaissance Square and Castle

Telc is one of those places that stops you mid-step. I rounded a corner into its main square and simply stood there, taking in a perfect ring of pastel Renaissance houses that looked almost too neat to be real. It is a small town, and that is precisely the point. These are the things I did on my visit that made it feel complete.

Walk the UNESCO main square

The centrepiece is Zacharias of Hradec Square, a long, gently curving plaza enclosed by arcaded houses in shades of yellow, pink, green and blue. The facades are among the best-preserved examples of this style anywhere, and the square earns the town’s UNESCO listing all by itself. I spent my first hour simply circling it, stopping at each house to watch the painted gables catch the changing light. The square holds a fountain, a plague column and several small cafes, and it is best enjoyed slowly, ideally with a coffee and no fixed plan. The arcades give shelter from rain and sun alike, which makes the town comfortable in most weather, and the views down the curving row of houses at dusk are quietly wonderful.

Visit the chateau

Behind the square rises the Renaissance chateau, reached by walking through one of the arched gateways that pinch the plaza. The restored interiors are worth the guided tour, especially the grand painted-ceiling rooms and the decorative halls in warm period colours. The tours are limited in size, so arriving early in summer pays off. From certain windows you catch beautiful framed views back over the square and the town walls, and the small courtyard at the end is a quiet place to catch your breath before the next climb.

The church and the towers

On the far side of the chateau, the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus stands apart on its own platform, and an easy climb up its tower rewards you with the single best panorama of the town. Telc is threaded with Gothic churches and civic buildings, and the views across the red-tiled roofs toward the surrounding trees are quietly lovely. If you time the climb for late afternoon, the low sun brings a warm glow to the entire scene, and the light makes the ponds below seem almost silver.

The ponds and the moat

Telc is a water town at heart, wrapped in a ring of fish ponds that double as its defences. I walked the path around the largest of them, past the water tower and along the old walls, and watched swans drift across the still surface. The reflections of the houses in the ponds are the images people carry home, and they really are as picture-perfect up close as in any photograph. Late afternoon and early evening give the liveliest reflections, so plan the walk accordingly, and bring a camera because the symmetry disappears the moment a breeze picks up. A slow lap of the water takes barely an hour, yet it is the part of the visit I remember most fondly, and it leaves plenty of daylight for the tower climb while the light is still kind.

Eat and browse

For a town this size, the options are surprisingly good. I had a proper Czech lunch of fried carp in season and home-made kolache pastries, and I hunted out the small local honey and herbal products that local families still produce. The evening quiet of the square, once the day trippers leave, is genuinely magical, so try to stay overnight if you can. After dark, the lit arcades give the plaza a theatrical intimacy you simply will not see on a day trip, and the small bars along the lanes make a relaxed place to end the evening.

Getting there and planning your visit

Telc is easy to reach as a day trip from Prague or Vienna, though the public connections are fewer than you might expect, so double-check departure times before you rely on the last bus out. A car gives the most freedom and lets you explore the surrounding ponds and woods at your own pace. Arrive by mid-morning to catch the square in its best light and beat the tour groups, and consider staying through sunset for the walk around the ponds when the reflections turn golden.

A closing note

Telc deserves a full afternoon and evening rather than a rushed stop. Give the square time, climb a tower, walk the ponds, and watch the light turn golden. Do that, and you will understand why so many travellers quietly rank it among the most charming places in the Czech Republic. The square stays with you, oddly enough, long after the tower views have faded. That single image is reason enough to make the detour.
