I have spent many long summers in Split soaking up its waterfront charm deeply. These are the memorable experiences that I personally hold dearest there.
Overview
Split beautifully wraps its ancient Roman palaces around a lively modern seaside. The polished marble lanes open out onto sparkling Adriatic quays. For more, see my Croatia travel guide.
The old city happily lives for warm sun, good coffee, and strolling along the riva. It balances genuine deep history with effortless coastal ease.
This guide carefully gathers the things that I absolutely love doing most in Split. Follow it all through for an authentic glorious Dalmatian adventure.
When to Go
May through September offers genuinely warm days and enjoyable sea swimming. I find June and September the very nicest balance of it all.
July and August bring the intense heat and truly peak summer crowds. However, early mornings along the riva still stay wonderfully peaceful.
Spring and autumn are both calmer with happily pleasant temperatures overall. These comfortable shoulder months suit relaxed easy exploring very well. I have tested each tip many times myself.
Top Things to See and Do
Wander through the living Roman ruin of Diocletian’s Palace itself. Its endlessly teeming lanes quietly hide cafes, shops, and deep history together.
Climb the tall campanile of Saint Domnius for a genuinely sweeping view. The lovely climb rewards you handsomely over all rooftops and bay. My Croatia travel guide covers this too.
Walk the famous Riva promenade at gorgeous sunset like a true local. That glorious golden light upon the water is pure magic indeed.
Take a comfortable boat to the nearby islands of Hvar or Brac. Lovely blue lagoons and relaxed deep towns await a short sail away.
Where to Stay
Stay within or right beside the palace for superb unbeatable atmosphere. I absolutely love stepping straight out into the historic narrow lanes.
The very edge of the old town offers calm attractive rooms near the water. Easy stairs conveniently connect you to all the major sights.
Budget hostels cluster neatly near the lovely port and the bus station. Always book far ahead during the very packed summer high season.
Getting Around
Everything fully central is wonderfully walkable, which simply suits me perfectly. I roam comfortably through the palace and the riva entirely on foot.
Local buses thoughtfully reach the further districts and nearby towns. The ferries conveniently connect you to the surrounding islands every single day.
For island hopping, carefully choose the early departures from the port. They always arrive long before the midday sun reaches its peak.
Food to Try
Grilled seafood straight from the Adriatic does beautifully dominate the menus. I always order fresh fish with a wonderfully chilled white wine.
Try the famous pasticada, a slow cooked beef stew served with gnocchi. This wonderful Dalmatian classic country dish is rich and deeply flavorsome.
Finish your dinner with a slice of rozata, a local caramel custard. It makes a gloriously sweet and creamy end to the entire meal.
Daily Budget
Budget travelers can fully enjoy Split on fifty to seventy dollars daily. Hostels and the cheap friendly konobas keep all of your costs down.
I find mid range comfort near one hundred sixty dollars each day. A central apartment plus fine seafood dining perfectly fits this plan well.
Island boat trips add the very greatest variable expense of all. Plan carefully for those if day sailing really features in your plans.
Safety Tips
Split is genuinely safe and nicely relaxed by European seaside standards. I calmly wander the old town throughout the night without concern.
Keep all of your belongings very close in the crowded lanes and boats. Those busy summer spots attract occasional and petty small thieves.
Swim always at the lifeguarded beaches and respect every warning flag. The beautiful sea is lovely but certainly always commands full respect.
Local Tips
Arrive nice and early to photograph the palace lanes before the crowds. That glowing golden morning light floods the narrow stone corridors.
Eat smiling where the friendly locals queue rather than the fanciest streets. Those constantly busy little konobas always serve the most honest food.
Take your coffee standing at a bar riva side like a genuine local. It is wonderfully cheaper than sitting and just as utterly delightful.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day one carefully explores the palace and climbs the tall campanile. I end with dinner and a glorious sunset stroll along the riva.
Day two takes a relaxing ferry to a neighboring island for lovely swimming. Return in the evening for a quite relaxed seafront dinner meal.
Day three wanders the markets, the gentle hills, and the quieter coves. A final farewell swim and pack skillfully closes the trip sweetly.
Common Mistakes
Do not stay entirely cooped up inside the old palace walls always. The wonderful waterfront riva and the hillsides add very much to your visit.
Avoid skipping the tall campanile climb merely to save on your effort. The absolutely breathtaking rooftop panorama is comfortably one of Split’s greatest rewards.
Just a lane or two inland always finds fairer tastier meals. You can also follow my Croatia travel guide for guidance. This kind of planning saves you real stress.
