Things to Do in Ohrid (North Macedonia)

Ohrid is one of the most beautiful lakeside towns I have ever seen. Its crystal water and old town stole my heart.

Set on one of Europe’s oldest lakes, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. I found it calm, spiritual, and utterly lovely.

This guide covers what to see, eat, and how to plan your visit. Let me help you discover this Macedonian gem.

Overview

Ohrid sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. The lake is one of the oldest in the world.

The town is famous for its many churches and scenic waterfront. I loved the blend of history, nature, and relaxed life.

Plan two to three days to explore the town and the water. It is a dreamy escape from busier destinations.

Ohrid also appears in my Balkans itinerary article. It is a perfect addition to a longer regional trip.

When to Go

I recommend May through September for warm weather and swimming. The lake water is wonderfully refreshing in summer.

June and July are the liveliest, with beaches and boat trips busy. I found the pace relaxed and enjoyable.

Spring and autumn are quieter and lovely for walking tours. The light over the lake is stunning at these times.

The Church of Saint John at Kaneo sits right on the water’s edge. I found its setting absolutely picture perfect.

Swim in the crystal clear lake and relax on the pebble beaches. I never tired of the gorgeous blue water.

Where to Stay

I recommend staying near the old town and the waterfront. Most sights and beaches are within easy reach.

Guesthouses with lake views are plentiful and reasonably priced. I loved waking up to the sparkling water.

For quieter spots, walk a little up the hill from the center. The views there are often even better than expected.

I spent a whole morning just floating in the calm clear lake water. The gentle temperature and quiet views made it wonderfully relaxing.

I woke each morning to the sound of gentle waves against the shore. It was a calm and lovely way to start the day.

Ohrid town is compact and I explored it almost entirely on foot. The lanes and promenade are a joy to wander.

Boat services cross and circle the lake for scenic trips. I took a boat to nearby lakeside villages easily.

Buses and minibuses connect Ohrid with Skopje and other towns. Renting a car helps explore the wider region.

Food to Try

Macedonian food is hearty and flavorful, and I loved the grilled meats. The local kebabs were tender and juicy.

Try tavche gravche, the national bean stew, and fresh lake fish. Both are simple, rustic, and delicious.

Enjoy local wine, cheeses, and the famous ajvar pepper spread. I found the Balkan flavors rich and satisfying.

A lakeside restaurant served me freshly caught fish one memorable night. I watched the moon rise over the dark still water.

Daily Budget

Ohrid is very affordable and excellent value for travelers. I spent around 35 to 55 euros a day comfortably.

Budget travelers can easily manage on 25 euros with guesthouses. Food, transport, and sights are all cheap here.

Boat trips and tours are fairly priced and worthwhile. I always carried a little cash for small vendors.

Safety Tips

Ohrid is a safe and relaxed place, and I felt very comfortable. Crime is low and locals are welcoming.

Stay alert around crowded beaches and boat docks with valuables. I kept my bag secure when swimming.

Pace yourself in the summer heat, especially when climbing the fortress. I carried water and took shade breaks.

Local Tips

Swim in the morning before the beaches get crowded. I loved the calm water and quiet shores at dawn.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

On day one, explore the old town, the churches, and the fortress. End with a swim and dinner by the lake.

On day two, take a boat to Saint Naum and the springs. I spent a relaxed day swimming and exploring the monastery.

If you have a third day, drive into the nearby mountains and villages. The scenery around the lake is beautiful.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is visiting Ohrid only for a quick stop on a larger tour. It deserves at least two nights.

Some travelers skip swimming because it is freshwater, but the lake is lovely. Bring a swimsuit and enjoy it.

Visitors often miss the quieter lanes and viewpoints above town. Climb a little and the views improve greatly.
