Things to Do in Maputo, Mozambique
Maputo surprised me from the moment I arrived. It is a warm, colorful city on the Indian Ocean with wide avenues, old architecture, and an atmosphere that feels both historic and full of modern energy. I spent my days exploring on foot and my evenings by the water, and there is so much to see that I am happy to share the things I found most worthwhile.
Wander the Waterfront and Marginal
I started with the Marginal, the sweeping waterfront promenade that runs along the bay. The views of the ocean and the city skyline were gorgeous, especially around sunset. I walked it at a slow pace, stopping to watch fishing boats and locals enjoying the breeze. It is the perfect place to get your bearings and feel the rhythm of the city. I would call it an essential first stop.
Explore the Central Market
The main market in the city center is a feast for the senses. Stalls overflow with tropical fruit, vegetables, spices, fish, and colorful fabrics, and the noise and energy are contagious. Even though Maputo itself kept me busy, that little taste of the wider coast rounded out my visit in a lovely way.
