Things to Do in Pattaya, Thailand: Beaches, Markets & More

Things to Do in Pattaya, Thailand

I showed up to Pattaya expecting a purely beach town, and I left surprised by how much variety fits inside one place. Pattaya, which sits across the Gulf of Thailand from Bangkok, brings together white sand, salt air, and a food scene that runs deeper than most tourists ever dig into. Here is what I actually did, liked, and would repeat.

Spend a Morning on the Beach Before It Gets Hot

The beach in Pattaya is the reason most people arrive. I learned quickly to go early. By nine in the morning the water is calm, the sand is cool underfoot, and the vendors are still setting up. I brought my own towel and a book, found a patch under a palm, and just sat. The water is shallow for a long way out, which made it easy for children and weak swimmers. Around noon the sun gets relentless, so I did my swimming in the first hours and saved the afternoon for shade.

Walk the Floating Causeway When the Tide Is Low

Not far down the coast sits a floating walkway that draws daytime visitors. I checked the tide table first. Low tide is the moment it makes sense, when the sandbars on either side turn into shallow wading pools and you can see tiny crabs scuttling in the shallows. I walked the full length and doubled back. Families were picnicking on the exposed sand, and a few people were collecting shells. It felt more like a local afternoon than a tourist checkpoint, which is exactly the tone I wanted.

Eat Your Way Through the Night Market

The night market deserves the hype, but only if you come hungry and patient. I arrived around six and worked through the stalls slowly. Grilled seafood appears everywhere, and I made sure to try whatever was smoking on that day. I also found a coconut ice cream stand that I went back to twice. The trick is to skip the places with the longest lines and follow the smell instead. Some of my favorite dishes that week came from small carts with no English menus. I pointed, smiled, and the person cooking smiled back.

Take a Day Trip Across the Water

Pattaya makes a useful base for hopping to smaller islands and quiet villages across the gulf. I booked a morning boat with a local operator and spent the day on the water. The boat ride itself was part of the pleasure. We passed fishing boats, driftwood, and stretches of untouched coast. On the far side I found a beach with hardly anyone on it, swam in water so clear I could see the sand ripple under my feet, and ate a lunch of freshly caught fish. I got back to Pattaya by late afternoon, salty, tired, and happy.

Browse the Souvenir Aisles but Buy Smart

I gave the souvenir streets a fair shot and found them better for browsing than buying. The shell lamps and carved wood are pretty, but the prices drop if you are willing to walk a few streets away from the main drag. I bought handmade soap and a sarong, both of which the vendors wrapped with more care than the transaction probably deserved. If you want something you will actually use, skip the novelty magnets and look for cotton, woven baskets, and spices, which travel well and feel less generic.

Watch Sunset from a Rooftop Bar

Pattaya has a few rooftop bars with water views, and they are the best seats in town around six thirty. I picked one with a western balcony and ordered something cold. The sun dropped behind the sea in slow orange stages, and the sky did that thing where it turns pink and then violet. It is a simple pleasure and one that costs almost nothing beyond the price of a drink. I would rank it higher than any excursion I paid for that trip.

Take a Morning Yoga or Stretch Class by the Sea

A quieter memory I want to keep involves the stretch of morning exercise classes that gather under the palms along the sand. I woke early one day, followed the sound of calm music toward the water, and joined a small group moving slowly through stretches with the ocean right in front of us. Nobody minded that I was a beginner. The salt air, the soft ground, and the light coming up over the gulf made it feel less like exercise and more like a way to begin the day properly. I went back three mornings in a row, and it stays in my memory as one of my favorite cheap pleasures anywhere.

My Quick Tips for Pattaya

Bring reef-safe sunscreen because the marine life here is alive and worth keeping alive. Carry cash for market stalls, since plenty of them do not take cards. Learn one Thai phrase, even just a thank you, because the response you get is worth the effort. And give Pattaya more than one day. The beach pulls you in, but the food, the water, and the slow evenings are what make you want to stay.
