11 Best Things to Do in Nha Trang, Vietnam
Nha Trang surprised me. I had been warned it was a beach party town, and yes, there is a lively strip of bars and resorts along the six kilometer beach. But the city turned out to be far more than that, a proper coastal hub with clear water, rich seafood, islands to hop and genuinely relaxing escapes inland. I spent five days mixing lazy beach time with day trips, and these are my favorites.
Swim at Nha Trang Beach
The city’s main beach is a long, gentle curve of sand running almost its entire length, backed by palms and a wide promenade. I loved swimming here early, before the heat peaked, then walking the promenade as the town woke up. In the evening the beachfront fills with families, food stalls and breeze, and the sunset over the water is reliably beautiful. It is free, easy and right where you need it.
Visit Vinpearl Land on Hon Tre Island
Across the bay, Hon Tre is home to Vinpearl Land, a huge amusement park reached by a long cable car that glides low over the water. The ride itself is a highlight, with the whole bay and city laid out beneath you. Once across, I found a water park, an aquarium and theme park rides, more than enough for a full family day. It is neat and well kept.
Ride the Vinpearl Cable Car
Even if you skip the park, take the cable car, one of the longest over sea in the world at over three kilometers. The views of the bay, the islands and the city skyline are superb, and crossing at sunset, with the sky turning pink over the water, was one of the most memorable rides of my trip. Morning and sunset have the best light.
Take a Boat Trip Around the Islands
Nha Trang Bay is dotted with islands, and boat trips are the classic way to see them. Most tours hop between a few stops for swimming, snorkeling and lunch on a floating platform. I took a day trip out to Hon Mun and past the fishing village and the clear turquoise water. The trip is fun even if you book a cheap group tour. Bring sunscreen and a bit of cash for drinks.
Dive or Snorkel Around Hon Mun Island
Hon Mun is the best spot in the area for underwater life, a marine protected area where you can see corals and tropical fish in surprisingly clear water. I went snorkeling here and found schools of colorful fish almost within reach. For certified divers there are operators offering deeper reefs. Even for a beginner, the surface snorkel is accessible and rewarding.
Soak in the Mud Baths
One of the most relaxing things in the whole of Vietnam, in my view, is a session in Nha Trang’s mineral mud baths. The big centers like I-Resort set up pools where you slide into warm, thick mud, then rinse off in mineral hot springs and relax in outdoor pools. I spent a blissful half day doing exactly that, emerging clean, soft skinned and deeply calm. Go on a weekday to avoid the biggest crowds.
Explore the Po Nagar Cham Towers
Perched on a low hill above the mouth of the Cai River, the Po Nagar towers are the surviving remains of a Cham temple complex, built over a thousand years ago and still used for worship. The brick towers are beautiful, and the shrine still receives offerings from local people. I came in the late afternoon, when the light warmed the red brick and the view over the river and sea was peaceful.
Wander the Dam Market
The Dam Market is the city’s main covered market, a maze of stalls selling everything from shoes to colorful local textiles. I wandered the food hall first, tasting dried squid and tropical fruit. Climbing to the upper level gives a good overview of the organized chaos below. It is a great place to pick up spices, coffee and small gifts. Go early when it is most alive.
Try the Seafood at the Coastal Streets
Nha Trang is famous for its seafood, and the whole harbor area is lined with restaurants and street stalls serving it fresh from the boats. I ordered grilled prawns, whole fish baked in salt and scallops with onion, all at prices that felt absurdly good. The best places are where the locals eat, often with plastic stools. Go hungry and order a cold beer.
Visit Long Son Pagoda and the White Buddha
A short drive from the beach, Long Son Pagoda is a working Buddhist temple set on a low hill, crowned by a huge white statue of the seated Buddha visible from across the city. Climbing the steps brings you to terraces with views and the calm of incense and bells. I found it a peaceful counterpoint to the beach sprawl. Dress respectfully and plan a quiet hour.
Climb Hòn Chồng for a View Over the Coast
Hòn Chồng, a rocky promontory at the north end of the city, offers one of the best coastal viewpoints in Nha Trang. From the low slopes you look out over the bay, the islands and the fishing boats, with the waves crashing against the big boulders below. I came near sunset and watched the sky fade over the water. It is small, inexpensive and quietly lovely.
Nha Trang is easy to underestimate and hard not to enjoy. Give yourself time for the water, the mud and the markets in equal measure, and keep your schedule loose enough to follow a good recommendation. The town does its best work when you let it set the pace.
