10 Things to Do in Mirissa, Sri Lanka
Mirissa is the kind of place that makes you cancel your plans and stay an extra week. A curve of golden sand on the south coast of Sri Lanka, it runs at the pace of the waves and the whales that pass offshore. I came for two days and stayed for six. These are the ten things I would do again, in the order I would do them.
1. Go Whale Watching at Dawn
The whales are the reason most people come to Mirissa, and they are worth the early start. I joined a boat that left before sunrise and motored out to deep water, where the crew scanned the horizon for spouts. When a blue whale surfaced beside us, the whole boat went silent. Book through a reputable operator and go in season, roughly November to April.
2. Surf the Miramar Beach
Mirissa’s waves suit beginners, and the surf schools on the beach are cheap and patient. I borrowed a board and stood up sooner than I expected on the gentle rollers of Miramar Beach. If you have never surfed, a lesson here is the softest way to start. If you have, the point breaks offer a bit more to chase.
3. Watch Sunset From the Coconut Hill Lookout
A short path climbs behind the beach to a lookout that locals call Coconut Hill. I went up in the late afternoon and watched the sun drop below the line of the sea, the palm trees framing the whole scene. It is a small climb with a big payoff and a spot where the day seems to end perfectly.
4. Walk the Main Beach Barefoot
Mirissa’s main beach runs for a long stretch of soft sand that I walked every day without tiring of it. In the morning it is nearly empty, and by mid afternoon the beach bars fill up. I liked it early, when the fishermen were pushing out their boats and the only sound was the water pulling at the shore.
5. Eat Fresh from the Beach Shack
Every evening the beach shacks set up tables on the sand and grill whatever came off the boats that day. I ordered fish and prawns, cooked simply and served with rice and a squeeze of lime. Eating at a table with my feet in the sand, watching the sky turn, was the best meal of my whole trip.
6. Drink a King Coconut at the Stands
The coconut stands along the road sell king coconuts, big and green and full of cool, sweet water. I bought one in the heat of the day and the man with the machete opened it on the spot. It is the most refreshing thing you can drink in the tropics, and it costs almost nothing.
7. Take an Early Morning Boat Past the Point
For a quiet view of the water, I took a small boat out past the point where the surf breaks. The boatman cut the engine and let us drift while the sun came up over the horizon. Turtles surfaced nearby and the only sound was water against the hull. It is a cheap and perfect way to see the coast from the sea.
8. Ride a Tuktuk to the Nearby Coves
The coast around Mirissa holds smaller coves and beaches that are worth a half day. I hired a tuktuk driver and bounced north to a quieter stretch where I had the sand almost to myself. It is a loose, easy trip and a nice break from the crowd on the main beach.
9. See the Mirissa Temple With the Big Buddha
Above the village, up a set of steep stairs, stands a tall white Buddha looking out over the water. I climbed up at the end of the day and stood in the quiet at its base, the whole coastline spread below. It is the highest point in Mirissa and a calm place to end an afternoon.
10. Slow Down and Stay an Extra Day
The real thing to do in Mirissa is to stop rushing. I canceled my onward plans and let the days blend together, surfing in the morning, resting in the afternoon, and sitting with the beach crowd at night. That is the point of the place. If you can, give it more than you planned and you will leave the way I did, already thinking about coming ba
Planning Your Mirissa Days
Book your whale watching for the first clear morning and you get the rest of your trip without hanging over your plans. Use the afternoons for surfing and the evenings for the beach and the sunset lookout. The town is small and walkable, so you never need more than a tuktuk for the coves nearby. Check the forecast before you lock in non refundable plans, because the ocean runs its own schedule. Bring reef safe sunscreen, a dry bag for boat days, and clothes that dry fast. Give Mirissa more days than you think you need. It is a place where the best part is the slow middle of the day, when the beach is quiet and there is nothing to do but be there.
