Best Time to Visit Victoria, Seychelles: A Month by Month Guide
Before I flew to Victoria I spent far too long reading conflicting weather advice, and honestly most of it was noise. The truth is simpler than people make it. The Seychelles sits close to the equator, so temperatures stay warm all year and the sun rises and sets at nearly the same time every single day. What actually changes is when the rain falls and which wind blows across Beau Vallon and the approaches to the smaller islands. Once I understood that, planning became easy. Here is how I would choose, month by month, based on what I saw on the ground over my visit.
The Two Seasons Explained
There are really two seasons here, not four. The northwest monsoon runs from roughly November to March. In this window the sea is calm, the beaches are at their best and the weather feels dry and bright, which is why the tourist season lands squarely inside it. The southeast monsoon runs from May to September and brings stronger winds, cooler nights and more showers. The two months in between, April and October, are the transition slivers where the weather can swing either way and the crowds thin out. My own trip sat on the edge of the dry season, and the difference between a calm and a choppy bay was obvious within days of arrival.
What Each Month Brings
From November through February is my pick for beach time. Days are hot, the water is glassy and you can plan boat trips without fear of being soaked. March holds similar weather but is often a little busier as holiday travel spills over. April is the sweet spot between patterns, hot and clear, and quiet too, which makes it my favourite month on the whole calendar. By May the southeast winds gather strength and the surf picks up, and the mornings can bring a short burst of rain. June to August is windier and cooler, with brief sharp showers, usually in the morning before the sun dries everything out. September is a softer version of that. October sits on the edge again, warm but changeable, and it rewards a flexible mindset.
The Best Time for Diving and Snorkelling
If clear water is your goal, the calm months around the turn of the year are unmatched. When the sea is flat, visibility near the granitic islands can be superb, and day trips out to Silhouette run smoothly without anyone getting seasick. The windier months push more plankton about, which the manta rays and whale sharks actually love, so serious divers sometimes prefer those months despite the choppier crossing. My honest advice is to match the season to the plan rather than chase a single best answer. Beginner snorkellers should aim for the calm window, while experienced divers chasing big marine life can happily choose the shoulder months and enjoy clearer conditions for ocean giants.
The Cheapest Time to Visit
For value, aim for the shoulder months. May and October tend to see lower hotel rates because the weather is less predictable, yet they still fall far short of monsoon misery, and the tradeoff is usually just a single rainy morning here and there. April is more expensive because the weather is reliably lovely and everyone knows it. If I were travelling on a tighter budget I would book late October, take the chance on a few showers and spend the savings on a better boat trip and a nicer room. In the peak of high season, December to February, flights and lodgings across the whole country jump noticeably, so book early and expect to pay full price.
Planning Around Holidays
Watch the calendar for the Seychelles national holidays and for the European school breaks that drive demand. Christmas and New Year are wonderful here, full of festive menus, warm nights and a genuinely celebratory mood, but they are also the busiest and dearest weeks of the year. A quieter version of the same energy appears around the July school holidays, when the island fills with families. If you want more naked beaches and shorter queues at the boat jetties, go in late April, mid May or October, when the crowds have drained away and the weather still behaves on most days. Those months balance everything nicely.
My Final Verdict
There is no bad month to visit Victoria, only months that suit different plans. For calm beaches and reliable sunshine I would book between mid November and the end of April, with April my personal favourite. For lower prices and fewer people I would pick October and pack a light rain jacket for the odd sharp shower. I travelled with my own patience tested by one wet morning, and within the hour I was back in a warm, flat bay with the sun out as if nothing had happened. That is the real climate of the Seychelles, quick to clear and forgiving, and for me it is part of the charm.
