Best Time to Visit Ternate
Ternate, a volcano island in the Maluku group, sits close to the equator, which means its seasons are about rain more than temperature. The choice of when to go shapes whether you climb the mountain on clear days or watch the island wrap itself in cloud.
The dry season runs October to April
Most people will aim for the long dry spell that roughly runs from October through April. This is the windfall period for Ternate, with sunnier days, calmer seas, and clearer views of Mount Gamalama’s cone. I walked the south coast in November and the water was flat and inviting, ideal for snorkelling and island hopping to nearby Tidore.
The wet months bring their own trade offs
From around May through September the island gets more rain. The showers can be heavy, the roads slippery on the climb, and the volcano’s summit more often hidden in cloud. It is not unusable, and I have had good dry stretches within it, but the weather is less dependable. If your priority is climbing Gamalama and hoping for a clear summit, those months make it a gamble.
Peak holiday pressure and prices
The driest and calmest weather draws local Indonesian holidaymakers, especially around school breaks and festive periods. I found that this pushes up prices at the nicer hotels and adds company to the beaches. Book ahead if your dates land in the busy windows, and be ready for a livelier atmosphere than the sleepy island look might suggest.

Person ask me for the sweet spot and I point to the early months of the dry season, around November through January. The rains are easing, the seas are calm, and the volcano is often out of cloud in the mornings. That window gave me my clearest morning view of Gamalama and my best snorkelling of the trip.
What the weather actually feels like
Keep expectations steady. Temperatures hover in the high twenties and thirties all year with high humidity, so comfort depends on sea breezes and the shade of the volcano rather than a cool season. Evenings are warm and breezy, and the air near the coast is fresher than in the interior. Pack light clothes, sun protection, and a rain layer regardless of month.
My practical verdict
For the best mix of clear skies and calm waters, October through April is the call, with November to January the sweetest stretch. If you come in the wet season you will trade some blue-sky days for fewer crowds and lower prices, which can be a perfectly fair bargain if your plans bend around the rain. Either way, build in flexibility, because island weather likes to have the last word.
