Pienza is a single small hill town in the Val d’Orcia, and its beauty lives less in its architecture, lovely as that is, and far more in the vast landscape that surrounds it. That means the best time to visit is really about two things above all else: the weather and the light. Because the Val d’Orcia is famous for its golden fields and its dramatic open sky, the season genuinely changes what you see and how you feel standing in it. Spring: green and fresh
April and May turn the Val d’Orcia into a sea of bright, almost impossibly green, with new growth over the fields and poppies appearing at the edges of the roads. The weather is gentle, warm enough for long walks but not yet hot, and the town is quiet outside the morning tour hours. This is a lovely window for walking the countryside and for photographing the valley at its most alive, and the light has a crisp clarity that spring brings. Note, though, that the classic golden, sun baked look of the valley, the one that graces a million postcards, comes later in the year. For green, alive, and wonderfully comfortable, spring wins without much of a contest.

It is still warm enough in September for long unhurried walks, and the harvest season gives the region a lovely, productive energy that you can feel in the villages. If the calendar is flexible, this is the window I would choose above every other.
Winter: quiet and moody
Winter brings cold, short days and a very different Val d’Orcia. The landscape lies bare and open under low winter light, and when fog settles in the valleys it becomes a muted, atmospheric scene that some people find even more beautiful than the summer version. Pienza itself is quiet, many places keep short hours, and you will rarely share a viewpoint with anyone. Hotel prices are at their lowest of the year, which makes it an honest bargain. If you want the classic postcard summer version, winter will not give it to you, but if you love landscapes with real atmosphere and you do not mind the cold, this is a secret well worth keeping to yourself.
Planning around the seasons
A few practical things I have learned will make any season work better. Whenever you come, plan your walking for the morning or the late afternoon, both for the light and to avoid the strongest heat of the day. Check whether the little permanent exhibition at the Palazzo di Pio II and the cathedral are open before you travel in winter, because opening hours shorten dramatically in the cold months. And if you are coming in high summer, book your hotel and your favourite restaurants well ahead, because this tiny town turns over its rooms fast. Think about what you want from Pienza before you book anything. The famous golden summer look belongs to June through September, plain and simple. The ideal combination of comfort, light, and small crowds belongs to September and October, or to April and May if you prefer green. Budget travellers who love solitude and moody light have their own quiet pick in the winter months. One practical thing worth knowing: on summer weekends the narrow lanes through the Val d’Orcia get busy and the parking in and near Pienza fills up fast, so travel outside the peak weekends when you can, and you will have this gorgeous valley at its very best with room to breathe. Choose the version you want, and the valley will meet you in its own good time.
