Ouarzazate sits at nearly twelve hundred metres on the southern edge of the High Atlas, which makes its climate kinder than the deep Sahara you picture. I have travelled through it in midsummer and again in winter, and I can tell you the season genuinely shapes how you experience the town. The roads over the Atlas pass are clear, and the desert beyond is at its most comfortable for day trips. If you want to combine the town with the dunes, this is my first choice. The wildflowers come out across the dry valleys, and the whole region feels awake after the winter.
Autumn offers the same magic
September to November mirrors spring with settled weather, warmer daytime highs, and evenings that invite long outdoor dinners. I love the autumn for the light, which turns low and amber over the mud brick walls, and for the fact that the summer crowds and the soaring heat have both departed. The date harvest fills the market with colour, and the studios are busy again with crews returning for the filming season. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are warm, and there is a golden quality to everything that makes even a casual wander feel special.
Winter brings cold nights and clear days
From December to February, daytime temperatures often climb into the late teens, but the nights drop sharply and can approach freezing. I stayed in January and was glad of a warm hotel room, though the days were bright and bracing and perfect for exploring. The upside is near total quiet, empty streets, and views of snow on the High Atlas peaks behind the kasbahs. This is the season for photographers who love crisp, low light and do not mind a chilly evening by the fire. The passes can get snow, so check conditions if you are driving in from Marrakech.
Summer is intense but manageable
June through August pushes daytime highs well past forty degrees, which is hard work for walking the kasbahs or the studio sets. I have done it, and the trick is strictly to schedule your exploring for the early morning and late afternoon, then retreat to a shaded terrace or a pool at midday. Because Ouarzazate is high and dry, the heat is more bearable than the humid coast, and desert evenings are surprisingly pleasant. If summer is your only option, plan around the heat and start every day before the sun gets high, and you will still see the town well.
Plan around the filming calendar
One detail few mention: the height of filming season runs through the cooler months, so if you are desperate to see a live shoot, winter and spring offer the better odds. For everyone else, aim for April, May, September, or October, where the balance of bright days, mild nights, slow crowds, and empty desert roads makes travelling here almost effortless. Show up in the shoulder season and Ouarzazate will show you its very best face, with the kasbahs lit low and the whole valley painted gold. Whenever you come, give the town a full day and the desert beyond a little more, and you will leave wanting to return.

In the shoulder seasons the studios, kasbahs, and desert roads are at their most welcoming, with manageable heat for walking and clear air for long views. Winter brings snow on the nearby passes, which adds drama to the scenery but can close some high roads. Summer is the season of extreme sites and early starts, best saved for travellers who enjoy testing their heat tolerance. For nearly everyone, the months of April, May, September, and October unlock the most of what this region offers in comfort.
Booking and crowds
I found that smart timing also means smart booking. In the shoulder season, rooms at the popular riads fill quickly, so I reserved ahead and was glad I did. The filming calendar adds its own demand in the cooler months, when crews take over entire hotels. Outside those peaks, the town is calm and easy, with parking by the kasbahs and short queues everywhere. A little planning across the calendar makes the difference between a rushed stop and the relaxed, golden visit that Ouarzazate deserves.
