When I planned my trip to the Maldives, I made the mistake of treating Male as an afterthought, a capital to pass through on the way to the islands. Then a local told me something that changed how I thought about timing: the weather on the resort atolls and the weather in the capital are the same, because it is all the same stretch of ocean. So there is no wrong window to visit Male itself. The real question is what kind of trip you are hoping for.
The dry season runs from November to April
The most popular time to visit the Maldives, Male included, is the northeast monsoon, which runs roughly from November through April. These months bring the calmest seas, the least rain and the brightest sunshine, and the lagoons glow in the light while snorkelling visibility is at its best. This is the window when the city feels busiest too, as travellers take a night in the capital before heading to their resorts. The trade off is real: hotels fill fast, flights cost more, and the streets feel lively from dusk until late. If you want to guarantee sunshine and do not mind the crowds or the price, this is your season.
The wet season runs from May to October
From May to October the southwest monsoon takes over, and the islands see more rain, rougher seas and higher humidity. Whole afternoons can pass in sudden tropical downpours, and the sun spends a lot of its time hiding behind heavy cloud. But the trade offs are worth weighing. Prices drop sharply, resorts clear out, and the capital feels like you have it almost to yourself. Surfers describe these months as the best for waves on the outer atolls. I visited in September once and had stretches of brilliant sun between short bursts of rain, and every dive I made came with a better price and fewer people in the water.
The shoulder months are the sweet spot
April and November are the shoulder months, and they are my quiet favourite. The weather is still good, the high season crowds have thinned out, and you dodge the heaviest of the southwest monsoon rain. Rooms cost noticeably less than at the peak, yet you still get long, bright days for exploring the capital on foot. If your dates are flexible, this is the best balance of price and weather the Maldives offers.
Festivals and events worth timing around
Ramadan shifts roughly ten days earlier each year, and it changes the rhythm of Male more than it does the resorts. During the holy month many restaurants close through daylight hours, then open in a rush after sunset for iftar, the evening meal that breaks the fast. Visiting during Ramadan offers an immersive local experience, but you need to plan your meals around the sun. Soon after Ramadan comes Eid al-Fitr, when Muslim families gather and the streets of the capital feel festive and busy. National Day, known locally as Qaumee Dhuvas, falls in November and brings parades and community events to the city that you will not see on any resort island.

November to February is the safest bet for dry, sunny days and is the peak of everything from prices to people. March and April stay warm and largely dry, though the heat builds as the year moves on. May to August carries the most rain and the best deals across the board. September and October see the weather improving again as the monsoon eases, with warm water lingering even when the sky clouds over. Across the whole year the sea temperature rarely drops below the high twenties, so swimming and snorkelling are never fully off the table, whatever month you choose.
Practical notes on the seasons
The heat in Male changes far less than the rain does. It stays hot all year, with highs in the low thirties even in the coolest months, so pack for humidity and sun rather than any cool spells. What shifts is the light and the suddenness of showers. I learned to carry a dry bag and to check the sky before walking the length of the city. The ferries keep running through rain all year, so the weather rarely strands you, though the sea around the capital can turn choppy when the southwest monsoon really gets going.

In the end, the best time to visit Male depends on what matters more to you: perfect postcard weather or peace and a better price. For my money, April and November offer the best of both worlds, bright days without the peak season crowds or costs. But if you have only one chance to go and want to guarantee sunshine on your one day in the capital, book the dry season and treat the higher price as part of the deal you are happy to pay.
