Best Time to Visit Lombok

Best Time to Visit Lombok

Choosing when to visit Lombok is less about good weather and more about deciding which version of the island you want to meet. The tropics keep it warm and mostly sunny all year, so the real differences come down to rain, surf, crowds and prices. I have visited in both the dry season and the shoulder, and each time the island felt like a different place. Here is what I learned about the calendar.

The Dry Season: April to October

The main dry season runs from about April through October, and it is the most popular window for good reason. Skies stay clear for long stretches, the sea is calm, and the south coast picks up the reliable swell that surfers come for. This is Lombok at its most classic: sunny days, warm evenings, and water that stays inviting from morning until late afternoon.

The trade off is volume. Within the dry season, July and August are the busiest and the most expensive months, when the island fills with travellers riding the northern summer. September, by comparison, often delivers the same good weather with noticeably fewer people and gentler prices.

The Best All Round Months

For my money, late September and October are the sweet spot. You keep the dry, settled weather and the surf, but the peak crowds have started to thin out after the summer. Everything feels a little calmer, a little cheaper and a little more relaxed. I had the clearest water and the emptiest beaches of my whole time there during an October visit, and I have recommended that window to everyone since.

May is another quiet favourite. It sits right on the edge of the season, usually dry and settled, with the surf just starting to build and the crowds still light. Accommodation is easier to come by and the villages feel calm. If you want good chances of perfect weather without committing to the heart of high season, May and October are the months I would name first.

The Wet Season: November to March

From November through March, the rains come in short, heavy bursts, usually in the afternoon or evening rather than all day. The island stays green and lush, and the daylight hours in between the showers are often completely fine. Prices drop, the beaches empty out, and you get Lombok far more to yourself.

The catch is that the sea turns rougher in places, and the best surf spots can go flat or messy. Boat trips to the outer islands may also be cancelled when the wind picks up. If your trip is mostly about swimming, sunbathing or relaxed beach days rather than waves, the wet season can still be a perfectly good time to come, and the greenery is at its most spectacular.

I travelled once in the shoulder between seasons and found the rain less of a problem than I expected. The showers are usually short, and the overcast mornings actually made long beach walks more comfortable than the blazing clear days. Just carry a light rain layer and keep your plans flexible so a post shower afternoon still works.

Surf Season Timing

If riding waves is the whole point of the trip, aim for the dry season when the southwest coast gets its consistent swell. The shoulder months of April and October are often excellent, with good waves and lighter crowds. Ask locally about the current conditions when you arrive, because the swell varies from week to week even within the season.

Holiday Periods to Know

Keep the Indonesian holiday calendar in mind. Christmas and New Year bring a surge of visitors, and local long weekends can fill the good accommodation quickly, even in the wet season. If you want the calmest experience, avoid those bursts and travel in the weeks between the big dates.

What to Expect From the Heat

Whatever month you pick, the weather stays warm and humid, which shapes the whole day. Mornings and late afternoons are the best time to be outside, while the middle of the day is made for a long, shaded lunch or a dip in the sea. The steady warmth means you can travel light, but it also means sunscreen, water and a hat are non negotiable, especially on the exposed south coast.

Humidity varies more than the temperature does. The wet season feels heavier in the air, while the dry months are fresher and easier for long walks or days on the water. If you are sensitive to that kind of weather, the answer is simple: come in the dry season and save the rainy green months for a return visit.

My Advice in One Line

Come in October for the best balance of weather, surf, crowds and price, or in the quiet rainy months if your priority is empty beaches and a slow pace. Whichever you choose, Lombok’s warmth does most of the work for you. Pack for sun, expect a shower or two, and let the island set the rhythm.
