Best Time to Visit Annecy: Weather, Lake and Seasons

Annecy gives you completely different holidays depending on the month you choose. In summer it is a lake town where you can swim every day. In winter it becomes a base for skiing and a quiet, snowy escape. I have been in three seasons and each felt like a different place. So the honest answer is that there is no single best time to visit, only a best time for what you want to do. Here is how the year breaks down so you can pick your moment.

Summer, June to September, for the lake

If swimming and the full lake experience are your priority, June to early September is the window. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, with the town packed and prices at their peak. The water reaches a comfortable temperature by the end of June and stays swimmable through September. For the right balance of good weather and fewer crowds, aim for late June or September. You still get warm days on the lake, but the pavements are easier to walk and you can actually get a table at the canal-side restaurants without a fight.

Spring and autumn for charm and quiet

May and October are my favorite months for walking and enjoying the old town without the rush. The weather is mild, mostly in the mid to high teens, and the light over the lake is gorgeous. Spring brings the blossoms and the first warm afternoons, while October coats the hills in colour that reflects off the water. You might get occasional rain in the shoulder seasons, so bring a layer and a light jacket. These months are perfect for cycling the lake loop, which is less fun when the paths are jammed with summer traffic.

Winter for snow sports and cozy evenings

From December to March Annecy turns into a ski base. The town itself gets cold, often hovering around freezing, and the streets can be quiet and atmospheric with the mountains snow capped above. The real draw is the ski resorts, with many a short drive or shuttle away. Even if you do not ski, there is something lovely about the old town in winter, empty on weekdays, with mulled wine at the markets in December. The lake does not freeze enough to trust for skating, so treat winter as a mountain and culture trip, not a lake trip.

Month by month in brief

January and February are the coldest, with the lowest crowds and the best access to the pistes. March and April warm up slowly and the town begins to stir, though the water stays cold. May is a sweet spot for sights and cycling. June brings full summer energy without the peak rush. July and August are hot, lively and expensive, best for committed swimmers. September keeps the summer weather but starts to thin out. October is calm and colourful, November turns quiet and rainy, and December brings the Christmas market and the first real cold.

A few practical notes

Whatever month you choose, book accommodation ahead, because Annecy is small and popular. The lake loop and the old town are at their best in the early morning light, so get out before the crowds. For swimming, go in September if you can; the water is still warm and the tourists have mostly left. For the mountains, any snowy month works, with January offering the deepest snow and December the prettiest towns. Pack for a north Alpine climate either way, meaning layers, a waterproof, and sun protection for those unexpectedly bright high altitude afternoons.

My personal advice is to let your holiday decide the date rather than the other way around. Want to swim and paddle? Come in September. Want to hike and photograph without company? Come in May or October. Want snow and fondue? Come in January. Annecy slots itself to your plans and does each season remarkably well.
