Neukolln used to be the district everyone warned you about, and now it is the one everyone is moving to. I have watched it change from my own kitchen window over the years, and I can tell you it holds onto its soul even as the crowds arrive. Here is what I actually do in this neighborhood, the things that make it one of the most interesting corners of Berlin.
Walk the Neukolln Canal
The canal that cuts through the district is my default path, a languid stretch of water lined with trees, boats and casual spots where people gather on warm days. I walk it in both directions and never tire of it. There are little decks and green banks where you can sit with a book, and in summer temporary pop up bars appear along the water. It connects Neukolln to its neighbor Kreuzberg, so you can build a whole afternoon around a slow walk between the two.
Dig Through the Weekday Market

I eat my way down these streets in stages, starting cheap and casual and saving the sit down rooms for nights out. The kebabs and flatbreads are legendary for a reason. Follow your nose and your appetite, and you cannot go wrong.

This district is go: for second hand shopping. Racks of leather jackets, vintage denim, old band tees and furniture that has lived a life crowd the shops and stalls.
