Spring break used to mean one thing to me: a packed beach with a line at every bar. I have changed my mind since. Depending on your budget and your mood, the best spring break can be a cheap hostel beach, a mountain getaway, or an all-inclusive resort. I have tried all three, and the single biggest lesson I learned is to pick the scene that matches the trip you actually want, then book early, because the best places sell out fast. These are the destinations that win for each style.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Mexico

Cancun is the granddaddy of spring break, and it still earns the title. The hotel zone has the white sand and the warm water, the party scene around the clubs is legendary, and the prices stay friendly in April before the summer crowds push them up. If your goal is a blur of beach days and dance floors, this is where you aim. I have had all-inclusive stays here that made the whole week feel effortless, with food and drink handled and nothing to think about but the ocean.

But I have learned that the area I keep returning to sits a little further south. The Riviera Maya, around Playa del Carmen and Tulum, keeps the same coast with a more relaxed tempo. One afternoon I sat on a beach at Tulum with the ruins rising on the cliff above me, and it beat any crowded resort day hands down. Walks in the cenotes, quiet yoga mornings, and long dinners by the sea give a different, slower version of the same holiday.

Puerto Vallarta, a Softer Side

On the Pacific side, Puerto Vallarta offers a warmer, more grown up alternative. The old town with its cobblestone streets and the Malecon boardwalk along the water are a welcome change from the high-rise resorts. I wandered the Zona Romantica at golden hour and felt a gentle, easy atmosphere you do not always get on spring break. The sunsets here, over the bay with the mountains behind, are among the best I have seen in Mexico, and spring sits in the sweet spot between the dry-season heat and the summer rains.

For a European spring break that does not empty your wallet, Lisbon is a standout. April brings mild, sunny days that are perfect for wandering the hills, and the food and transport are still reasonably priced compared with the capitals further north. I took the historic tram up to the Alfama district, ate a warm pastel de nata on a terrace by the river, and felt like the break could stretch on forever. Nearby, the beaches of the Cascais coast are a quick train ride away for anyone who needs the sand.

Grand Canyon and the Desert Southwest

Not everyone wants a beach, and that is fine. During spring, the American Southwest hits its ideal weather window, with warm days and cool nights before the brutal summer sun arrives. The Grand Canyon in April is magnificent, and the crowds are thinner than in summer. I hiked partway down the Bright Angel Trail and stared out across that enormous chasm for a long, silent while, the way you can only do when the light is soft and the trails are quiet.

I have split spring breaks between time in Ubud, among the rice terraces and temples, and afternoons on the coastal cliffs watching the waves roll in. Thailand and the Philippines offer similar moves with different flavors, and the value for money across the region is the best in the world. Budget stretches, treats go further, and a whole week of beach, food, and adventure can cost little more than a few nights back home.

Pick the scene you want before you pick the price. If it is nonstop energy, go to Cancun or a lively resort town. If it is relaxation without the chaos, choose a smaller beach or Portugal. And if it is adventure, head for the desert or the mountains. Whichever you choose, book lodging early, because spring break fills up quickly, and give yourself at least one unplanned day. The best moments are almost always the ones you did not schedule. Plan the skeleton, leave room for spontaneity, and the trip will take care of itself.
