Best Places to Visit in November
November is the traveler’s best kept secret. The fall color has faded, the crowds have vanished, and the world feels like it is catching its breath before the holidays. For me it is a month of cozy interiors, quiet streets, and destinations that finally belong to the people who live there. These are the places I love most when the year turns inward.
Iceland
November in Iceland is all about the northern lights. The nights are long and dark, which is exactly what you want for aurora hunting, and the landscape wears a coat of early snow. I rent a car and chase the lights from the open road, then warm up in lagoon after lagoon, the steam rising into the cold dark. The Reykjavik coffee shops and bars are cozy and full of life. It is moody, dramatic and unforgettable.
Piedmont, Italy
November is white truffle season in Piedmont, and the town of Alba smells like heaven. The truffle fair runs through the month, and the local restaurants go all in. I spend my days in the vineyards, now bare and golden under the low light, and my evenings over long dinners of tajarin and shaved truffle. It is food travel at its most indulgent, and the countryside is heartbreakingly beautiful.
Kyoto, Japan
Late November is prime momiji season in Kyoto, when the maple trees turn a deep, electric red. The temples are all lit up and the gardens at their most dramatic. It draws a crowd, but the color is so extraordinary that I do not mind sharing. I go early in the morning and watch the light come through the leaves. November is when New York turns festive. The Macy’s parade rolls down Central Park West on Thanksgiving, the holiday windows go up, and the tree lighting signals the start of the season. I love the city in this month because the energy is contagious without being full-on. Crisp walks through the parks, warm pretzels, long evenings in neighborhood bars. It is a month made for a big city with warm interiors.

For travelers who want sun without the crowds, the Algarve in November is a marvel. The temperatures still sit in the high sixties, the beaches are empty, and the cliffs glow in the low southern light.
