The lagoon is the beating heart of Funafuti, and it is where I spent most of my time. The water is calm, warm, and so clear that I could see the sandy bottom long before I was over it. The local fishermen and boat guides can take you out to the motus, the small islets strung along the atoll, and that is where the magic really lives. I snorkeled in the shallow channels, floated under a wide open sky, and found tiny beaches where I had the whole world to myself. Pack a mask, a towel, and a whole afternoon.
Funafuti Conservation Area
One of the few official natural attractions on the atoll, the Funafuti Conservation Area covers the southern islets and the reef around them. This is the spot for calm, undisturbed snorkeling and for seeing the lagoon at its healthiest. The new Parliament building
One of the newer landmarks in Funafuti is the Parliament building, a striking white structure that stands out against the blue sky and the green palms. I walked past it during the day and was struck by how proud the locals are of it, and rightly so, it represents the identity and the future of this tiny nation. You may not be able to go inside, but it is well worth a look from the outside, and it makes for a fine photo against the lagoon. Combine it with a stroll through the nearby village and you have a lovely morning.
The best beaches for a slow day
The ocean side of the atoll is lined with beaches that are rough, raw, and absolutely beautiful, with surf crashing against the reef and sea spray in the air. For swimming, the lagoon side is where you want to be, with its calm, shallow water. I found a patch of sand on the lagoon side early one morning and simply sat there with a book for two hours. Do not expect powdery white resort sand everywhere, this is a working, living island, but there are plenty of quiet corners where you have the sea to yourself.

Bring everything you need, the island has limited supplies and few ATMs. Carry Australian dollars in cash, dress modestly in the villages, remove your shoes before entering homes, and always be patient and kind with the people who live here. Weather can change fast, so have a backup plan for rainy afternoons. Funafuti rewards slow travelers, so do not rush. The best place to visit is often simply wherever you are at the moment, with the lagoon glinting beside you and the world moving at exactly the right pace.
