Best Places in Graz
Graz is a city that rewards being pointed in the right direction, so I am happy to share the spots that made the biggest impression on me across my visits. These are the places I would tell a friend to build a trip around, and the ones I would happily go back and see again myself, because they are the reason the city has stayed with me.
The Schlossberg and the Uhrturm
The Schlossberg is the hill that defines Graz, and the clock tower at its top, the Uhrturm, is the symbol of the whole city. I went up by the funicular once and walked up through the greenery another time, and both routes are worth doing for different reasons, the funicular for the ease and the walk for the quiet. At the top the panoramic view over the red tiled roofs and the river is superb, and the tower itself has an odd and endearing charm, with clock hands that look far too small for the face it is a detail that photographs well and feels even better in person. You can even stay up there for a glass of wine as the light fades and the city lights come on below. It was my favourite spot in the city, and I am not sure anything will displace it.
The Old Town
The historic centre of Graz is a UNESCO site and it is the kind of place you can get lost in happily for a full day. I spent hours drifting through the narrow lanes, past painted facades, quiet courtyards and small squares that each seem to have their own character, and every street gave me a reason to stop. The Hauptplatz with its town hall is the obvious anchor, but the joy for me was always in the accidental finds, a tucked away café, a hidden passage, a courtyard you stumble into without meaning to. This is a place to slow right down and let the streets lead, because that is how it reveals itself.
The Landhaus and the Rathaus
Two buildings in the old town stood out for me as worth making time for. The Landhaus, the old seat of the Styrian government, has a beautifully preserved arcaded courtyard that is worth finding even if you are not a history person, because the architecture is genuinely lovely and the space feels peaceful. And the Rathaus, the town hall facing the main square, is the grand centrepiece of the Hauptplatz, elegant and commanding. Neither takes long, but together they give you a real sense of the city’s civic heart and its long, layered history.
The Kunsthaus
The Kunsthaus is hard to miss because it looks like a giant blue blob sitting in the middle of the Lend district. Locals call it the friendly alien and it is a contemporary art museum with a futuristic presence that stands in surreal, striking contrast to the old town across the river. I went in and found the building itself more memorable than the collection, which is a fair thing to say, and the shape of it plays with the light in ways that keep photographing well. It is worth a visit just to see it, and the Lend neighborhood around it is full of galleries, bars and a creative energy I genuinely liked.
The Murinsel and One More View
What I did, and loved, was cross the Murinsel, a floating island and bridge shaped like a giant shell that sits on the river. It is a little odd and a lot of fun, and taking the walk over the water from the old town to the Lend district, with the city sliding past on both sides, is a lovely way to spend an hour. I never quite made it to the hill with the Christian cross above the town, which means I have a reason to go back. Graz built its charm out of small, memorable places like these, and they are exactly why the city stays with you.
Practical Notes From My Visits
A few things made these places better the second time I saw them. Going to the Schlossberg early morning or at sunset gave me the calmest, loveliest moments at the top. Comfortable shoes were essential given the hills and the cobbles. And the old town rewards early starts, before the tour groups arrive and the cafés still feel like they belong to the locals. These small choices are why I recommend Graz so warmly, because the city keeps giving back whatever care you put into it.
The Harmony of the Whole
The real magic of Graz is that no single spot outshines the rest. It is the way they fit together, the hill above the old town, the river crossing below it, the strange spaceship of the Kunsthaus anchoring one bank. I have never visited a city where the landmarks cohered so well, and that is the reason I keep coming back.
