Best Pet-Friendly Travel Destinations

My dog has a passport stamp now, which still feels absurd and wonderful. Traveling with her changed how I see a place. I stopped judging cities by their museums and started judging them by whether a tired dog can drink from a café bowl, whether a park is off-leash, whether a hotel greets her like a guest instead of a problem. Portland is absurdly dog-friendly, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Dogs ride the MAX light rail, queue for treats at the food carts, and sprawl under tables at countless patio spots. Forest Park wraps the city in miles of trails, and the Japanese Garden is one of the few such places that lets well-behaved dogs in. I have never visited a city where my dog was greeted so warmly so often, and it made the whole trip feel like a holiday for both of us.

Paris, France

Paris rolls out a red carpet for dogs, at least in spirit. Cafés let them settle under the tables, the broad boulevards and the banks of the Seine make for long gentle walks, and the city treats muddy, dripping dogs like the local celebrities they clearly are. Both the Tuileries and the Luxembourg gardens proved accommodating for a polite dog. Trains into the city are straightforward with a pet, and the whole experience felt elegant rather than awkward.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona pairs sunshine with a genuine welcome. Dogs are common on the beaches outside the busy months, and the city offers dedicated dog beaches where mine could race into the waves without dodging anyone. The Montjuïc hills give you quiet trails right above the city, and the café culture is happy to host a panting companion with a water bowl on hand. The city is casual and warm, and pets slot into it without a second thought.

Austin, Texas, USA

Austin might be the most dog-forward big city in the United States. The town lake trail runs for miles along the water, with dedicated off-leash areas where dogs can swim and sprint to their heart’s content. Breweries and taco joints set out water bowls without being asked, and the culture treats dogs as full participants in the day rather than afterthoughts. I have rarely seen so many happily muddy dogs in one city.

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is a nature city with a dog on every leash. The seawall around Stanley Park is a world-class walk with the ocean on one side and forest on the other, and dogs adore it. The city has a proper network of off-leash parks, and the rain-friendly, outdoorsy culture means a dog is never out of place on a bus, a ferry or a trail. The relaxed West Coast energy made us both feel at home right away.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is hilly, golden and remarkably at ease with four-legged visitors. The cobbled streets are a joy to wander even when they get steep, and the terraces almost always have room for a dog at your feet. The parks on the hills breathe, and even the crowded trams accept a calm dog without a fuss. Lisbon’s low-key warmth extends to everyone, and mine spent most of the trip being patted and admired.

Asheville, North Carolina, USA

Asheville sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains and builds its whole culture around the outdoors, so a dog is right at home. The river arts district has a dedicated dog park beside the water, and the trails in the surrounding mountains run from gentle strolls to full-day adventures. Breweries here put out dog treats alongside the flights, and the small-town scale means nothing is far from a good walk. It is the perfect low-key getaway for a hiking companion.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is famously permissive, and that extends to dogs in the best way. Dogs ride the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, join you at bars and restaurants, and the city offers plenty of parkland including the huge Tiergarten. The paved towpaths along the canals make for long, safe urban walks, and the culture genuinely expects you to bring your dog almost anywhere. I felt no hesitation taking mine out all day, which is exactly what I look for in a destination.

Sydney balances a busy waterfront with real dog-friendly living. The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee is spectacular, and while some sections ask for a leash, dogs get plenty of room to stretch. The city’s inner parks stay lively with off-leash pups through the evening, and the relaxed café culture welcomes a well-behaved companion. With the harbour, the beaches and a genuinely pet-positive spirit, Sydney wraps the whole package together.

The travel writer in me once measured destinations by skyline photos. Now I measure them by something simpler, whether my best friend was treated like a traveller too. These places did that without any special effort. They simply decided that adventure belongs to everyone, no matter how many legs they have, and that is a standard more places should chase.
