Best Places to Visit in October
October is my favorite month to travel, full stop. The light goes amber, the air gets crisp, and the world smells like woodsmoke and fallen leaves. It is a season that rewards slow travel, the kind where you linger over a long lunch and walk until your cheeks are pink. Bavaria, Germany
Oktoberfest runs into early October in Munich, but skip the festival tents if that is not your pace. The real magic is in the villages and the countryside. I drive through the foothills of the Alps when the beer gardens close for the season and the harvest festivals take over. The trees turn a deep gold and every little town seems to be roasting chestnuts or pressing cider. It feels like stepping into a postcard that someone forgot to color in.
The Finger Lakes, New York
Few places do October leaves better than the Finger Lakes. I rent a cabin on Cayuga and spend the days cycling between wineries and walking the gorges. The weather can do anything in October, but when it cooperates it is perfect: crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and skies the color of a bruise at dusk. The crowds are gone and the tasting rooms are quiet. I always leave with more cider doughnuts than I planned.
Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon in October is still warm enough for outdoor dinners but cool enough to explore all day. The light in the Alfama is extraordinary this time of year, and the tourist crush that defines summer finally relents. I spend my mornings wandering the miradouros, looking out over the red rooftops, and my evenings at long tables of small plates and grilled sardines. October makes this city feel intimate.
The Oregon Coast
The Pacific Northwest in October is moody and magnificent. I drive Highway 101 when the waves get big and the headlands disappear into fog one minute and blaze in the sun the next. It is the off season, so the beach towns are quiet and the rental cottages are affordable. I pack rain gear and a good sweater and let the weather be part of the experience. Quebec City in October is pure theatre. The leaves turn along the old walls and the St. Lawrence gets a cold silver sheen. I love walking the battlements in the morning when the air is sharp, then tucking into a bistro for a long, warm lunch. The European feel is strongest in autumn, when the stone streets and glowing cafes seem designed for a crisp evening. It is romantic without trying.

October is the month of layers. I build everything around a base layer, a warm sweater, and a waterproof shell, because the weather can swing from perfect to pouring in an hour. Comfortable boots are essential. And do not forget that the sun sets earlier now, so plan for golden evenings and bring a book for the long dark hours.
