Best Places to Visit in Fall
Fall, or autumn, or however you say it, is the season I look forward to all year. The heat breaks, the light goes low and golden, and the world turns red and orange before my eyes. It is a traveler’s reward after the busy summer, a chance to see places quieter, softer, and more beautiful than at any other time. These are the corners of the map that fall was made for.
New England, USA
The classic fall destination, and for good reason. New England’s foliage runs from late September through October, and the color across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine is the stuff of legend. I drive the winding farm roads, stop at covered bridges and apple orchards, and hike the low peaks where you can watch the valleys blaze below. No one paints a fall quite like New England does.
The Highlands of Scotland
Scotland in fall is moody and majestic. The heather is fading, the leaves along the lochs and glens turn amber, and the light does something extraordinary with the low sun. I spend my days walking the hills in search of red deer and my evenings in pubs with roaring fires. The air is crisp and the whisky is smoky. It is a dramatic, brooding kind of autumnal beauty that I cannot get enough of.
New Zealand’s South Island
Remember that the seasons flip below the equator. The South Island hits its glorious golden autumn in April, when the beech forests around places like Queenstown and Wanaka turn deep gold. I take the gondola up for panoramic views, cycle around the lakes, and swim in the crisp water. It is fall with southern charm, a completely different version of the season, and it is stunning.
The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
Croatia in September and October is a blissful secret. The summer crowds are gone, the sea is still warm enough to swim, and the stone towns like Split and Dubrovnik glow in the low light. I spend my days on the islands, swimming from rocky coves, eating long meals of seafood, and watching sunsets over the Adriatic. It is the Mediterranean at its most peaceful.
Bavaria’s German Alps
Bavaria in fall is the perfect blend of mountains, lakes, and festival culture. The autumn beer festivals are in full swing, the alps are laced with late color, and the lakes reflect it all perfectly. I hike in the foothills and celebrate with the harvest tables that stretch long into the night. It is a warm, generous, golden season in a part of the world that knows how to mark it.

Fall is a season of layers and flexibility. The weather can deliver a perfect string of golden days or turn cold and damp without warning, so warm, waterproof clothing is essential. Colors and festivals are tied to window that varies each year, so I stay flexible on timing and check forecasts. It is the tradeoff for fewer crowds and lower prices. The peak season of autumn is worth catching at its best.
The Golden Season
Fall is the season that photographs itself, that rewards the wandering driver and the early riser and the person willing to sit by a fire with very little else to do. It is a time when the world seems to glow from within. Whether you go to New England, the Highlands, or a quiet Adriatic town, fall has a way of making ordinary moments feel profound. It is my favorite proof that the best season might just be the one before winter.
