Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta

One of the great things about Puerto Vallarta is that it does not really have a bad season, but it does have a rhythm, and matching your trip to it matters a lot. I have visited in the dry winter heat, in the green hum of summer and in the shoulder months in between. December through March also draws the humpback whales to the bay, and a boat trip to see them breach is the single best thing I have done in the city. Expect lively crowds and higher prices, especially around Christmas and Easter, so book well ahead.

Whale watching season

If the whales are your reason to come, target mid December through mid March. This is when the humpbacks arrive from the north to breed and calve in the warm bay, and the sightings are reliable rather than a lucky bonus. I went out in January and watched a mother and calf cruise right past the boat, close enough that I could hear the whoosh of their breath. The shoulder months of May and October

May and October deliver warm days, less rain than high summer, and far fewer crowds. The ocean warms up and the evenings stay balmy, perfect for late dinners outdoors. Prices drop noticeably, and the beaches and towns feel more relaxed, with locals reclaiming their favourite spots. I spent a week in mid October where the mornings were golden, the afternoons had a short tropical shower that rinsed the dust from the leaves, and I often had whole stretches of sand to myself. For value seekers, these months are quietly unbeatable.

Summer from June to September

Summer is the green season. Afternoon rain and the occasional storm are common, but so is a quiet, intimate version of Puerto Vallarta. The hills blaze green, hotel rates drop to some of the year’s lowest, and the bay water is at its warmest. I found that the rain never lasted long and the sun always returned, usually within an hour. This is the pick for budget travellers and anyone who does not mind working around a daily shower, and the jungle waterfalls that swell with the rain are a genuine highlight.

Practical weather notes

Every season in Puerto Vallarta is warm, so pack light layers and comfortable sandals for the cobbles. The most useful garment is a light long sleeved shirt for evenings and air conditioned buses. During the wet season a foldaway rain jacket or compact umbrella earns its space in your bag. And the sun here is fierce even in winter, so sunscreen is non negotiable all year round, along with a decent hat for the midday walks.

How the season shapes your stay

The season choice also changes how the city feels beyond the thermometer. In the dry high season the streets are busy, the restaurants full and every sunset draws a crowd along the Malecón, which some visitors love. In the shoulder and summer months the vibe turns more local and unhurried, with quieter terraces and easier conversations with the people who live there. Neither is better, they are simply different versions of the same warm city. Decide which atmosphere you want, then let that, as much as the weather, guide your dates. Either way, arrive with sun protection, a light layer for the evenings and an open mind, and the best of the city will surface no matter which month you land in. The city rewards anyone who plans around its rhythm, so the small effort of matching your dates to your goals pays off in fuller days, emptier beaches and a stay that feels exactly right from the first morning.

My honest advice is to decide based on your priorities. Whales and guaranteed clear skies mean November to April. Quiet beaches and value mean May, June or October. As long as you match the season to your plan, Puerto Vallarta will reward you in every one of them, and that is the joy of the place.
