I have planned countless Seoul trips for friends, and a good itinerary makes all the difference. Here is my five day plan that flows smoothly through South Korea’s capital.
Seoul blends ancient palaces with swirling neon energy. This route spreads the highlights out so nothing feels like a blur.
Day One: Palaces and History
Start at Gyeongbokgung Palace early to beat the crowds. Watch the guard change at the main gate around ten in the morning.
Walk through to the Bukchon Hanok Village next. Explore the traditional lanes, then descend into Insadong for lunch and teahouses.
Day Two: Markets and Old Seoul
Spend the morning at Gwangjang Market for a memorable breakfast. Try the savory pancakes and freshly rolled gimbap at the stalls.
In the afternoon visit the lively district of Myeongdong. Shop for cosmetics and snack on street food as the sun sets.
Day Three: Modern Seoul
Cross the river to Gangnam and explore the stylized streets of this upscale district. Visit the COEX Mall and its giant library.
Later, ride the subway back for views at N Seoul Tower. I aim for sunset to watch the skyline glow below.
Day Four: Culture and Nature
Dedicate the morning to the vast Changdeokgung Palace grounds and the secret garden. Book the guided walk well in advance.
In the afternoon, escape the city to a hiking trail up Namsan or Bukhansan. Fresh air and skyline views reward the climb.
Day Five: Food, Art, and Nightlife
Browse the galleries and murals of Hongdae, then grab lunch at a buzzing student cafe. This district keeps its own energy.
End your trip with Korean barbecue and fried chicken. Find a rooftop bar for one last toast to the glowing skyline.
One More Day
If you have a sixth day, take a day trip to the Demilitarized Zone or the pretty city of Suwon. Both are easy by train.
You can also catch the high speed rail to Busan for a beach finale. Book tickets online early to save money.
Where to Stay
Base yourself in Myeongdong or Jongno for this route’s first half. Both put palaces and markets within easy walking reach.
Hongdae suits nightlife lovers for the final nights. Any metro line near your door keeps the whole plan easy.
Getting Around
The subway is the fastest way around Seoul. Grab a T money card at any convenience store for easy taps.
Buses reach the neighborhoods the metro misses. Use a maps app with English support for the smoothest journeys.
Food to Try
You must try Korean barbecue, bibimbap, and crispy fried chicken. A steaming bowl of soondubu jjigae warms cold days.
Street food shines at Gwangjang and Myeongdong. Share dishes and sample widely across your visit.
Budget
Seoul offers great value for a world class city. Cheap subway fares and wallet friendly street food keep costs down.
Plan around fifty to ninety dollars a day for comfort. Splurge on one nice meal or a rooftop bar as a treat.
Safety
Seoul is remarkably safe and clean. I always feel at ease walking around even late at night.
Keep your phone close in crowded markets and trains. General common sense is really all you need here.
Local Tips
Learn a few Korean phrases like ‘kam sa ham ni da’ for thanks. Locals truly appreciate the friendly effort.
Use the T money card for every ride and tap. It makes getting around Seoul feel completely effortless.
Common Mistakes
Do not try to see all five palaces in one day, since you will burn out. Pick two or three and savor them.
Final Travel Tips
Taste the everyday food, not just the fancy restaurants. Street stalls often hold the truest flavors.
Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it often. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up all day.
Wear a money belt or keep valuables in a front pocket in crowds. Small habits prevent big problems.
Use the underground or local buses over taxis when safe. You save money and see real daily life.
Take notes during your trip for a journal or blog later. The memories fade faster than you think.
Book key sights online in advance to skip ticket queues. A few minutes of planning saves you hours.
Keep your hands free with a cross body bag. It deters pickpockets and keeps your essentials easy to reach.
Learn the local emergency number and save it in your phone. It takes seconds and brings real peace of mind.
Pack versatile clothes that you can layer and rewear. Light luggage makes every step of travel easier.
Start your day a little earlier to enjoy quiet famous sites. You will get better photos and calmer moments.
