Things to Do in Kenting, Taiwan: Beaches and Beyond
Kenting sits at the southernmost tip of Taiwan, where the island’s gentle spine meets the warm ocean, and it has a feel unlike anywhere else in the country. Palm trees, cheap beaches, surf, and a relaxed pace give it the atmosphere of a small tropical town that never sleeps in summer. I have spent many long weekends here, and every visit leaves me with a new favorite spot. This is my list of the things worth doing, from the famous to the quiet corners most visitors miss.
Start on the sand at Kenting’s beaches
The beaches are the heart of the town. Little Bay, or Siaowan, sits right near the center and is the easiest place to reach on foot, with clear water and gentle waves that suit swimmers. A short drive south brings you to South Bay, the widest and busiest stretch of sand, where the water toys and banana boats run on every holiday. For quieter water I head to Outer Bay on the eastern side, where the current is stronger but the crowd thins out. In summer I arrive before ten to claim shade, and I always bring reef safe sunscreen.
Snorkel the coral at Houbihu
The clearest water around is at Houbihu, a small fishing port on the west coast where coral reefs run right up to the shore. The snorkeling here is the best in the whole region, with colorful fish hovering over living coral a few strokes from the rocks. I bring my own mask and dive from the shallow bays, and on calm days the visibility is outstanding. There are plenty of operators renting gear and running boat trips, so you do not need any experience to see the underwater world.
Walk the forest at Eluanbi Park
For a break from the sun, Eluanbi National Park offers shady trails through a subtropical forest to the historic lighthouse at Taiwan’s southernmost point. The white lighthouse is the most photographed landmark in the area, and the coastal path around it gives you crashing waves and wide ocean views. I enjoy the short boardwalk loop in the late afternoon, when the light is golden and the sea breeze keeps things cool. It is a calm, easy walk that fits into any itinerary.
Get high at Maopitou boardwalk
Just west of town, Maopitou is a raised coral headland with a cliff top boardwalk that looks out over the ocean toward the horizon. The views are dramatic, with the blue water stretching to a famous rock shaped like a cat’s nose. I time my walk for sunset, when the sky turns pink and the fishing boats below come home. It is one of the quietest and most scenic spots in the area, and most of the tour buses pass it by.
Explore farther on Longpan Park
On the eastern side of the cape, Longpan Park is a grassy cliff above the sea with views that stretch for miles, including over to Orchid Island on clear days. There are no trees and no shade, so I go early in the morning or late in the day. The grassland drops sharply to the Pacific, and the wind can be fierce, but the scenery is unforgettable. My favorite thing is watching the waves below from the bluffs with almost no one else around.
Eat your way through Kenting night market
When the sun goes down, the main street of Kenting transforms into a night market stretched over blocks. Grilled corn, fresh seafood, mango shaved ice, and every street snack you can imagine fill the stalls, and the whole town hums with music and lights. I make a habit of grazing here for dinner, eating a little from each cart and finishing with a big bowl of mango ice. It is the social heart of Kenting and my favorite way to end a hot day.
Take a boat out, or find a hidden beach
For a different view, I take an afternoon boat from the harbor to spot the resident turtle population in the coastal waters, something I always find moving. If you have time, the less crowded bays around the cape reward slow exploration, and I have discovered a few tiny coves that are my private favorites. Whether by boat, by foot, or just by swimming from shore, Kenting rewards people who wander a little farther from the main strip.
My closing advice
Kenting is at its best when you mix the famous spots with the quiet ones. Do the night market and South Bay, of course, but leave room for the cliffs, the coral, and the empty coves. Pack sandals, sunscreen, and a decent mask, plan around the sun, and let the town’s easy rhythm set your pace. I come back every year, and every year Kenting gives me something new.
