Best Time to Visit Flores
Flores rewarded me when I got the timing right and punished me gently when I did not. The island is mountainous and stretches far east into Indonesia, so the weather is not one single story that holds for the whole crossing. I travelled across it twice in different seasons, from the coast into the highlands and back again, and came away with clear, hard won opinions about the best time to go.
The Dry Season Is the Clear Winner
The best time to visit Flores is the dry season, which runs roughly from May through October. I travelled in June and again in October, and both trips were settled, sunny and full of clear skies. The volcano peaks stood out cleanly against the horizon, the sea between the islands was calm and easy, and the roads across the mountains stayed dry and passable. That combination matters more here than almost anywhere else I have been, because so much of Flores is reached by crossing high, winding passes where rain turns everything slow and slippery.
July and August for Diving and Kelimutu
If your priorities are big marine life and clear crater lakes, aim for the heart of the dry season. In July the underwater visibility around the Komodo islands is excellent, the seas are calm enough for comfortable liveaboards and day boats, and the famous dive sites are at their generous best. Kelimutu tends to be at its clearest in these months too, with the three lakes showing their full colour with fewer clouds drifting through the crater. The downside is simple. Crowds and prices both climb. I booked accommodation and boat trips well in advance and still found everything busy, so plan ahead if you pick this window.
April to June as My Personal Sweet Spot
Late April through June is the window I recommend first to anyone who asks. I found the worst of the rains had passed, the landscapes were still a deep, soaked green that the dry season soon fades, and the trails and islands were far emptier than in the peak months. Kelimutu could still throw a passing shower at me in the afternoon, but the mornings were reliably clear and the whole island felt fresher and more alive in the lingering wet greenery. If you want good weather with space to move, this is the window to pick.
September and October for the Islands
September and October give you the tail end of the dry season with far fewer people than August. I spent October loading and unloading boats in and around Labuan Bajo and the water stayed warm, calm and clear the whole time. It is a strong choice if you want dependable dry weather and empty decks without committing to the middle of the crowded peak. The highland passes stay dry too, which makes the road crossing genuinely pleasant.
The Wet Season from November to April
The wet months are not impossible, but they are genuinely limiting. I crossed stretches of Flores in December and, while the sun often did appear, big sections of road turned muddy and unpredictable and the sea was too choppy to reliably reach the islands at all. On one damp afternoon Kelimutu ended up wrapped in drifting fog, hiding the very lakes I had come all that way to see. If you want dependable, comfortable travel where nothing is a gamble, this is the window to steer around.
Pack for Both the Hills and the Coast
Even in the dry season I carried a light rain shell, because the mountains cloud over in minutes and the passes are exposed. In the shoulder months I added a genuinely warm layer for Kelimutu mornings, which are cold at 1,600 metres of altitude and chill you far more than you expect from the tropics. The coast, by contrast, stays warm all year, so half my bag was always swim gear. Planning for both ends of that range made every single day comfortable.
The Coast and the Highlands Differ
One detail few people mention is that the west coast around Labuan Bajo and the eastern highlands can feel like different weather systems on the same day. I watched the islands stay warm and sunny while the passes near Kelimutu threw cloud at me within the space of a single drive. That means the best window for a boat trip around Komodo is not always the best morning for a clear lake view, so I built flexibility into my plan instead of chasing a single perfect day.
Final Thoughts
Flores is at its most generous from late April through October, and my heart keeps landing on the shoulder months for the balance of clear weather and calm space. The mountain road wants dry traction, the sea wants calm, and both are most likely in that window. Aim there, pack for the altitude, give yourself the full week, and the island will open itself to you exactly the way it did for me.
