Things to Do in Railay, Thailand
The first time I arrived at Railay, by longtail boat with my bags balanced on my knees, I almost laughed out loud. There I was, stepping onto a strip of sand that had no road leading to it, with towering limestone cliffs behind and turquoise water ahead. Railay, in Krabi province, is one of those rare places that works best when you cannot drive to it. It stays cut off, which is exactly its magic.
Here are the best things to do in Railay, collected from trips where I came back with salt in my hair and sand in everything I owned.
Laze on the Beaches
Railay splits into two main beaches, and they feel different. Railay West is the long, wide strand where the sunsets are legendary, and I have spent more than one evening just watching the sky turn orange behind the karsts. Railay East is muddier and quieter, better for a stroll or a cheap meal. Lay out a towel, swim in the calm warm water, and let the cliffs do the talking. That simple act is honestly the highlight for most people.
Watch the Climbers on the Cliffs
Railay is world famous for rock climbing, and you do not need to climb to enjoy it. I have sat on the sand and watched climbers thread up the improbable walls above, their ropes glowing against the rock. If you have never tried it, the limestone slabs over Railay East are perfect for beginners. I took my first shaky lead there, guided by a friendly local instructor, and the view from halfway up the wall made the whole thing worth it.
Take a Kayak Around the Headlands
On a calm day, I rented a kayak and paddled around the narrow straits between the beaches and out toward the hidden coves. There is a small island just offshore, and at low tide the sandbars appear. Paddling in the shadow of the cliffs, with the water so clear you can watch fish below, is one of the calmest things I have done in all of Thailand. Rent early, and mind the swell if the wind picks up.
Escape to Pranang Cave Beach
A short walk through a cave and jungle path, or a quick paddle, brings you to Pranang Cave Beach, the most beautiful spot in the whole area. Sheltered between cliffs with soft sand and a shrine tucked into the rock, it feels untouchable. I swam there in the late afternoon, when the boats had mostly gone, and it remains one of my favourite swimming memories anywhere.
Practical Notes
You can only reach Railay by boat from Ao Nang, Krabi Town, or Phuket, and the short ride is part of the adventure. Bring cash, because there is no ATM that always works and cards are unreliable. Pack light, you will carry your own bag across the sand. And wear shoes with grip, because walking between the beaches means crossing a rocky, rooty headland path that I have tripped on more than once. Come for a couple of days at least, and Railay will slow you right down.
