3 Days in Florianopolis: A Weekend on the Island

3 Days in Florianopolis: A Weekend on the Island

I had three days on the island of Santa Catarina and I squeezed every one of them dry, in the best possible way. Florianopolis is not a city you need to rush through, but with only a long weekend in hand I wanted a plan that mixed beach, food, and the old town without collapsing into a heap of missed connections and skipped swims. The good news is that the island is compact enough to loop in three days if you move with purpose. This is the route I took, and it worked exactly the way I hoped it would, and it is the route I would hand to a friend without changing a single turn.

Day One: The Southern Beaches

I rented a car at the airport the minute I landed, and I recommend you do the same even for a short stay, because this island is long and the best spots are spread out in a way that no bus schedule will ever fix for you. You will not want to be trading your precious days for transfers here. My first day went south to the surf at the far end of the coast, and I let the ocean set the agenda from the moment I parked.

I parked near the dunes, walked the soft sand until the beach opened wide and empty in front of me, and ate lunch at a shack where the fish could not have been fresher if I had caught it myself with my own hands. That afternoon I found a quieter cove with almost no one in it, a slip of beach sheltered by low rocks, and I floated until my fingers pruned and my mind went completely blank. It was the easiest first day a trip ever gave me, and I felt the city tension leave my neck somewhere around the third swim.

Day Two: The Old Town and a Sunset

Day two I drove back north into the Centro Historico, the colonial old town with its small fort and its rows of painted houses that look like they have kept their colors for two centuries. I climbed the hill to the mirador for the view over the lagoon and the bridge, catching my breath at the top and deciding the climb had been worth every step. I wandered the compact streets until my appetite caught up with me, then I ate lunch off the main tourist line and got the better meal for it.

That evening I parked by the sand and watched the sunset move over the water, and I want to be honest with you about this part. That sunset is the reason people stay on this island at all, the reason the ferries are full at dusk and the benches face west. It earned its reputation in the loudest, most color burning way I have seen in a very long time, and I did not take a single good photograph of it because I was too busy just watching. I will remember it better than I remember any camera file.

Day Three: The Lagoons and a Big Finale

My last morning I went to the lagoons at the center of the island, a long calm stretch of water that sits far from the surf and feels like a completely different country from the coast. I paddled out on the flat surface and let myself drift, watched the dunes rising golden on the far side, and took one final swim at a beach I had been saving all trip for the closing act. It was the right note to end on, easy and warm and slow.

With the whole island as your playground, a three day loop works because every single day is a different landscape. Beach on day one, then history, then lagoon on day three, and then it is back to the airport with sand in my shoes and a thin tan line I refused to acknowledge on the flight home. Three landscapes, three moods, one small island, and somehow it all fits together like it was designed for exactly this length of stay.

Practical Thoughts

Three days in Florianopolis is a fast version of the island, but it is a genuinely good one, provided you plan it right. Rent the car the moment you arrive, book a place with parking so you are not circling the block after a long beach day, and let the beaches set the pace rather than the other way around. You will not see everything, nobody does in three days, and that is fine and honest. You will see enough to know you want to come back, which is exactly what a weekend away should do, and that is enough planning on my part.
